SIBEL THRASHER

We became aware of Sibel Thrasher through our friends of Vancouver Canada in the Compound Blues Band about a year ago. Finally we were able to catch up to this lovely lady and first-class star who has the voice of golden velvet.

DGT: How and what age did you first get involved with music?

ST:my first public performance was at the age of 5years old, but to hear my mother tell it was as soon as i was born and i was born singing not crying. and i was tap dancer and singing with my costume on as a leaf dancer

DGT: Who were some of your earliest influences?
ST: my grandmother Pattie Saffell and mother Who was the first Afro American Methodist woman minister in Cincinnati, Ohio.

DGT: (if not prev. answered in Q 1 ) Did you take any formal training or otherwise learn to play other instruments?

ST: never studied music but my mother taught me how to sing with my 2 brothers and we were call The Thrasher Singers.. we were a Gospel group..

DGT: Now that the music business has changed so much over the past few decades and we've lost many of the great singers is there anyone whom you've heard that you think will carry the torch and become the vocalist who people will want to see in concert and buy their albums for the new few coming decades?
Someone who you think can really have longevity in the business?

ST: Ella Fitzgreald. Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr.,Dinah Washington, Mahalia Jackson.

DGT: Sibel, you have done a lot of performing and recording as well. Some artists are more comfortable in the studio than on the big stage under the lights, while others still are just as happy doing both. Which one are you and why?

ST: Love being in the studios recording and making music and love singing on stage to deliver the message from my music....

DGT: When I started out singing years ago we didn't have ear-worn monitors. In fact, we were lucky to even have a nice floor monitor so what's your take on hearing yourself properly and being able to deliver a pitch-true performance everytime, as we notice a lot of pitch errors these days on television?

ST: thank God for the monitors so you can hear what is being played!  I feel this is a blessing.

DGT: Sibel - what does " being a professional entertainer " mean to you?

ST: understanding the message you are giving from your music and speaking clearly so everyone can understand what you are saying and dressing well and representing yourself as a true artist.

DGT: Have there ever been times when you just didn't feel well or there were some outside influences in your personal life which presented a challenge before you went on stage - and if so, how do you get beyond it and live up to the saying " the show must go on " ?

ST: Oh yes there has been times when  I couldn’t speak and was very ill but the trooper that I am I still got on that stage and performed ..wished Icould have been better and I prayed a lot... I still don't know how I did the show but I did do it!!!!!

DGT: Some of the new artists of the day are making unreal amounts of money per year such as 50-100 million or more in their music careers, while still tens of thousands of artists are barely getting by yet they will do anything for a chance to play. Has the pursuit of money ever been a major factor in your own motivation to perform? What are your thoughts on this?

ST: what a question, HMMMMMMM...I have been blessed to make my singing as a career and making my living this way but there were and or times when I wondered where I am going to get money for the rent and bills but it does come through. Thank God....but I wonder how to get that big money and would I be really happy with that kind of money....

DGT: Has there ever been someone famous whom you would love to
sing with?

ST: Tony Bennett, I love him and his music and I would love to sing with Roy Ayers again.

DGT: Sibel we always love to ask an artist like yourself what advice you would like to share with young people who are now considering a life in the music business or show business. What are some of the "pros and cons" to this lifestyle and pathway?

ST: Keep the dream and follow your dreams. I believe all things are possible but you got to believe it will happen. it's like tripping over a rock, trip but get back up and keep standing and be strong and make sure you read your contracts before signing and if you helped with the writing get it in writing.

DGT: Sibel we would like to thank you for allowing us to come into your life and talk to you today. We wish you well. Any closing thoughts?

Sibel Thrasher -

Thank you God for giving me my voice and helping me through this life and for meeting all the people and traveling and learning about people and there beliefs. I love my life even though it is a struggle at times and I love giving pleasure and putting a smile on someone’s face for that moment of time that anyone can hear me sing....
