THE COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES
Story by THE MIAMI MAD HATTER
"The music of the Coffee House Gypsies from the Southern tip of Florida is as magical as their name implies." That is what music critics say about the alternative folk-tinged rockers that have been releasing recordings since 1997 and performing live all over Florida and New York City. With over 30 original songs and more than 60 covers, they have earned comparisons to old school legends like "Fans of Fleetwood Mac and the Mamas and the Papas should dig this group without question" by Miami New Times and "CHG's sound is reminiscent of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and The Mamas and the Papas" by The Miami Herald.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel said that "change is their mantra" when reviewing the band, referring to their flexibility within the alterna rock genre. This might be because the band often plays acoustic or unplugged performances despite being known for electric guitars and full drums. They also do occasional spoken word poetry bits between songs and they are always jamming with other bands and artists. They have had as many as three guest cameos from other bands join them on stage during a show. Also they have released everything from reggae rock tracks to acoustic folk tracks and have even appeared on a club dance track by Billboard dance music producer, Kevin Michaels.
In 2008 the band was invited to play for the anniversary of Tobacco Road, Miami's oldest and most famous bar and venue. That same year they received ten different nominations at the Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards for categories like Best Male Vocals, Best Female Vocals, Best Show, and Best Cover Song. They won nine of the ten awards they were nominated for. Last year the band was invited to perform on the radio with Michael Stock of WLRN for a second time, appearing as an acoustic act with an MTV Unplugged-like set. Later that year they took home the South Florida QOOL Shows Award for the category of Best Pop Band.
Probably the most interesting thing about this band is their love for concept albums. Their recent 13 track release titled 'The Artist' is a statement in artistry and artistic integrity. It moves through various styles like folk rock, reggae rock, pop rock, country rock, and retro 80s rock, making the statement that artists create for the sake of art and inspiration, not always following a formula or conforming to standard norms. This is echoed in the opening track, a spoken word piece titled 'The Artist' that says things like "in a black and white world where you are called crazy, bought, packaged and sold" and "when the muse calls on it won't be long, soon we all are what we've eaten." The album features cameo appearances by other South Florida artists such as Carmen Tauler and Frances Gronlier from Pretty On Paper, Jonathan Clarke from Panama City and various members of the bands Crashing Tide and Pangea.
